Think about the space that exists between the tops of skyscrapers. If you don’t live in a city, think about the space that exists between trees. Between leaves. Between different flowers. What conversations can be had in those spaces? is it quiet? what color is it?
Go into a peculiar building. If there is a shop owner, front desk person, security guard, etc, ask what the original purpose of the building was. If there is no answer, attribute a story of your own.
Go to a transit station, preferably where you can enter without a ticket. Go to a concession where you can take a coffee or have a beverage. Observe the people around you in transit. Where are they going? This also works in the lobby of a hotel.
Shower or bathe in the dark.
Fabricate a conversation with your biggest inspiration (artist, muse, political figure, etc). Ask they the Proust survey. Speak out loud as both parties and record it or write about what the conversation would be like.
Put all your favorite items into a suitcase as if you had to vacate your home with only those items. Close the suitcase, but a table cloth over it, and drink a cup of tea while contemplating the items. Why are they your favorite? When you finish, return the items to where they belong in your home. Record your feelings.
Ask a stranger how they think you spend your time.
Write down everything you have an instinct of taking a picture of throughout your day. At the end of the day review the list.
Look at yourself in the mirror — Do a blind contour of your own face.
